The story of Felwood.
Felwood is what Ashenvale becomes when demons have their way with it. Its northern forest was once as green and ancient as the rest of the night elves' woods, but during the Third War the Burning Legion set out to weaken the night elves before the Battle of Mount Hyjal. The dreadlord Tichondrius used the Skull of Gul'dan to poison the land, and the forest twisted: trees blackened, the water turned to fel ooze, and the creatures that lived here became mutated, maddened things. Illidan Stormrage took the skull and its power for himself, and for that Malfurion banished him.
The Legion was beaten, but the taint stayed. Corrupted ancients stagger through the trees, and the Shadow Council keeps the corruption alive from Jaedenar, where Lord Banehollow and his warlocks serve their demon masters. The plants themselves have sickened, though druids of the Cenarion Circle have found ways to cleanse some of them, and the healed flowers give strength to those who find them.
Not everything here is lost. The Timbermaw furbolgs, one of the last tribes of their people untouched by the corruption, hold the tunnels of Timbermaw Hold in the north, the road to Moonglade and Winterspring. At the Emerald Sanctuary, Greta Mosshoof fights to drive back the satyrs and heal the land, and both factions keep small camps here: the Horde at Bloodvenom Post and the night elves at Talonbranch Glade.
