The story of Darnassus.
Darnassus is the capital of the night elves, a city of moonlit terraces and living trees built high in the boughs of Teldrassil. After the Third War, the night elves gave up the immortality the old World Tree had granted them, and many found mortality hard to bear. The archdruid Fandral Staghelm led the druids in planting a new World Tree off the coast of Darkshore to restore their bond with nature, and Darnassus took root among its branches as a monument to the survival of their people.
Two powers share the city. High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind rules from the Temple of the Moon, where the Sisters of Elune worship the moon goddess, and the Sentinels answer to her. Fandral leads the druids from the Cenarion Enclave while Malfurion Stormrage, the greatest of them, is away in the Emerald Dream. The two do not always see eye to eye, and Teldrassil itself has never been blessed by the dragons the way the first World Tree was.
The city is quiet and green, with few walls. Visitors arrive by the portal at Rut'theran Village below the tree, and find the inn on Craftsmen's Terrace, the auction house on Tradesmen's Terrace, the bank in the Temple Gardens and the Sentinels gathered at the Warrior's Terrace by the gate.
